CROSS CURRICULUM
• History of the steel pan and music in Trinidad
including:
- Slavery and slave trade.
- Outlawing of African drums and music.
- Creation and banning of tamboo-bamboo.
- Alexander's Ragtime Band.
- Winston "Spree" Simon (little pans, convex pans).
- Ellie Mannette (55 gallon oil drum, concave drums, US
Navy Base/WW II).

Listening to and describing audio recordings of
panorama style steel bands, Andy Narell, and Liam Teague.
Listen to and describe a live steel pan performance of "Rain
Drops" by Liam Teague performed by Mr. Anderson.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
• Students will learn the history and the
development of the steel pan in Trinidad. Students will also learn
to play the steel pan with correct mallet choice and technique.
