3rd Grade: "The Mitten" by Jan Brett

Visit Jan Brett's web site: http://www.janbrett.com

"The Mitten" is a Ukrainian folktale that is retold and illustrated by Jan Brett.

The following story summary was taken from Jan Brett's web site.

"When Nicki drops his white mitten in the snow, he goes on without realizing that it is missing.

One by one, woodland animals find the mitten and crawl in; first a curious mole, then a rabbit, a badger and others, each one larger than the last. Finally, a big brown bear is followed in by a tiny brown mouse, and what happens next makes a wonderfully funny climax.

As the story of the animals in the mitten unfolds, the reader can see Nicki in the borders of each page, walking through the woods unaware of what is going on.
Once again Jan Brett has created a dramatic and beautiful picture book in her distinctive style. She brings the animals to life with warmth and humor, and her illustrations are full of visual delights and details faithful to the Ukrainian tradition, from which the story comes."

3rd Grade students learn then perform a song with the story that I learned from Beth Melin Nelson at the First Iowa Orff Chapter on October 8th, 2005.

The song consitsts of singing, pitched percussion, and un pitched percussion. Once students can perform it "somewhat" comfortably, students have the opportunity to be a character from the story.

In the final production, students perform the music after the narration of each page of the book (after an animal is introduced). While the music is being performed, an animal acted out by a student, enters the mitten (a big white sheet big enough for the "animals" to crawl under).
