| Students learn creepy
bug songs and poems in the spirit of Halloween. Materials used
include songs and poems I learned from Beth Melin Nelson at the
First Iowa Orff Chapter Workshop on October 8th, 2005. Other materials
used include poems from the books "Bugs" (Poems
by Mary Ann Hoberman and illustrated by Victoria Chess) and "Insectlopedia"
(Poems and paintings by Douglas Florian).
Songs and Poems learned:
"Good Night Sleep Tight":
This song is in rondo form. The A section is a traditional nursery
rhyme. The contrasting sections are "bug rhythms" (student
derived rhythms from the rhythms of speech of types of bugs) played
on non pitched percussion.
"Mosquitoes": This song is
in the aeolian mode (minor mode). A minor melody is set to the
poem and is sung with a 3 part Orff orchestration using soprano,
alto, and bass xylophones and metalaphones. Non pitched percussion
is added on the rhyming words.
"Ants": Is a poem using non
pitched percussion in 6/8 meter, and is stylistically similar
to a march. Students march to the beat while playing rhtyhms with
the text of the poem on non pitched percussion.
