State of Iowa Teaching Standard 3

Standard 3  Demonstrates competence in planning and preparing for instruction. The teacher:

1. Uses student achievement data, local standards, and the district curriculum in planning for instruction.

     Justification: Lesson plan uses ICCSD general music curriculum.  Skills and concepts covered in the lesson plan are circled on the curriculum guide.
2. Sets and communicates high expectations for social, behavioral, and academic success of all students.

       Justification: Social and behavioral expectations are communicated and established through posting, discussing, and continued practice of posted classroom rules.
3. Uses students’ developmental needs, backgrounds, and interests in planning for instruction.

       Justification: Lesson plan uses visuals including a 3 line staff for solfege, 3 line staff cards and notes (given to every student) for individual solfege and note manipulation, and a Halloween poster and ghosts with rhythms to create rhythms to perform.  Students interests are considered through melodic choice, rhythmic choice, prior knowledge of Halloween, and choice during movement exploration and improvisation.
4. Selects strategies to engage all students in learning.

       Justification: Visual learners are aided by the use of visual manipulatives of the 3 line staff and the ghosts with the ghost poster.  Kinesthetic and visual  learners are aided by the use of Curwin hand signals when singing, use of instruments, and movement.  The auditory learner is aided through verbal instruction throughout the lesson, singing, and call and response.   
5. Uses available resources, including technologies, in the development and sequencing of instruction.

       Justification: As noted in the lesson plan, resources used include use of recordings (Halloween songs and sound effects), visual aids, visual manipulatives, and use of pitched and non pitched percussion.
